THIS BLOG is NOW RETIRED

I began this blog in May 2009 following the death of Marcia Powell at Perryville State Prison in Goodyear, Arizona. It is not intended to prescribe the path that leads to freedom from the prison industrial complex.

Rather, these are just my observations in arguably the most racist, fascist, militaristic state in the nation at a critical time in history for a number of intersecting liberation movements. From Indigenous resistance to genocidal practices, to the fight over laws like SB1070 and the ban on Ethnic Studies, Arizona is at the center of many battles for human rights, and thus the struggle for prison abolition as well - for none are free until all are. I retired the blog in APRIL 2013.

The Call for the 16th National Day of Protest
to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and
the Criminalization of a Generation

October 22, 2011

Across the U.S., Black, Latino, and poor neighborhoods are treated like occupied territory by increasingly militarized armies of law enforcement. People are criminalized and brutalized for their perceived status – socioeconomic, immigration, mental health, and/or racial, gender, or sexual identity. People living in our communities, especially youth, are routinely stopped, harassed, beaten, and even killed.

In Chicago, the home of the first Black president, police have shot 44 people so far this year, mostly youth of color, including 13-year-old Jimmell Cannon, who was shot eight times.

NYPD continues to stop hundreds of thousands of youth of color every year for the most minimal suspicion, fewer than 10% of which result in arrest, and far fewer in charges or conviction.

Police nationwide continue to kill with very little consequence. Twelve Miami cops shot at 22-year-old Raymond Herisse 100 times, then threatened those who recorded the incident, destroying their cellphones. A Tucson SWAT team shot at 26-year-old Iraq War veteran Jose Guerena over 70 times, claiming that he fired at them and then leaving him to bleed to death in his home. Both their allegations of gunfire and drug-dealing were later revealed to be false. In New York and New Jersey, at least 28 people have been killed by police since October 22 of last year, while at least 35 people have been killed by law enforcement in Washington State in the last 12 months. The killing of 22-year old Oscar Grant in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2009 resulted in a rare conviction for the officer who shot him; however, he was freed after mere months in prison, while people protesting the outrageous verdict were met with police violence and mass arrests. In the weeks following that cop’s release, SF cops killed Charles Hill, a 45-year-old homeless man, on a subway platform and 19-year old Kenneth Harding after he supposedly failed to pay a $2 train fare, then left him dying on the pavement in front of dozens of outraged witnesses.

Police routinely abuse the mentally ill and disabled. Fullerton, CA cops beat to death homeless and mentally ill 27-year-old Kelly Thomas, described by many in the community as “a gentle, childlike soul.” In Fresno, CA, 28-year-old Raul Rosas, Jr. died after being tasered by police. His girlfriend said "I didn't call the Fresno County Sheriff to kill him. I called because he needed help with his mental illness.” Raul went into cardiac arrest and was denied access to three medical ambulances that showed up to assist.

Recently enacted anti-immigrant laws have given police in the states of Arizona, Georgia, and Alabama sweeping powers to stop people "suspected" of being undocumented on no other basis than appearance. The hostility and racism stoked by these policies have already culminated in violence, as seen in the killing of 15-year-old Sergio Adrián Hernández Güereka by a border patrol agent and the beating death of 42-year-old Anastasio Hernández Rojas at the hands of La Migra. More than one million have been deported under the Obama administration.

Racially targeted mass incarceration exacerbates the criminalization and marginalization of Black people, playing the same role as the Jim Crow laws that sprang from the Virginia slave codes of 1705. In 1954, 90,000 Black people were incarcerated. Now, over 900,000 Black people are imprisoned, a tenfold increase, while the total U.S. Black population has merely doubled in the same period. The U.S. also has the highest incarceration rate worldwide, with 2.4 million people in prison.

Law enforcement continues to harass and sexually assault people, most especially women and the transgendered. According to the website InjusticeEverywhere.com, sexual misconduct was the second most common complaint (following excessive force) against police in 2010, involving 618 cops.

Young schoolchildren are increasingly labeled and treated as criminals by school security and local police. Eight-year-old Aidan Elliot was peppersprayed and handcuffed by Colorado police, and ten-year-old Sofia Bautista was removed from her elementary school, then taken to a NYPD precinct, handcuffed, and interrogated for hours, while police nationwide continue to use tasers on students as young as six.

Meanwhile, repression against those who take action against injustices continues to escalate. Over a dozen activists with Food Not Bombs have been arrested in Orlando for feeding the homeless in public parks. The killings of Oscar Grant, Kenneth Harding, Kelly Thomas, Raymond Herisse, and John T. Williams (in Seattle) were all caught on video. Now, as if in retaliation against the subsequent public outrage, police in cities and towns nationwide have attacked and arrested people merely for recording their activity, while in Illinois, Maryland, and Massachusetts, video-recording the police is now explicitly illegal. Cops haven’t stopped killing and brutalizing people—they’re just making it a crime to record them while they do. Repression against progressive and antiwar activism has intensified: simultaneous FBI raids on activists from numerous antiwar and international solidarity organizations in three U.S. cities took place on September 24, 2010. Twenty-three activists now face serious jail time for refusing to participate in the ensuing grand jury witch hunts that clearly intend to discourage and intimidate would-be dissenters.

These vicious attacks are not going down without opposition. Whether standing up to police violence when it happens, as we saw in the video of Kenneth Harding's shooting, or organizing inspiring prison strikes in Georgia and California, people are uniting to fight back. Determined outcry from people nationwide against the shooting of unarmed men crossing the Danziger Bridge in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina has finally brought convictions of the guilty cops and exposed the sort of extensive cover-ups that are routine with police shootings. More and more crimes against the people are being revealed, as we have seen with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives’ Operation Fast and Furious, which intentionally provided weapons to Mexican drug cartels, and the overturning of over 4,000 convictions of youth in Pennsylvania after it was found that juvenile judge Mark Ciavarella received kickbacks from private for-profit detention centers. Once we have seen the man behind the curtain, how can we pretend he is not there? One thing we know from years of experience is that when this system has to answer to organized people, it can’t easily get away with all the things it's used to doing. Resistance matters.

THE VIOLENCE OF THE COPS, THE COURTS, THE FBI, LA MIGRA, AND HOMELAND SECURITY IS INTENSIFYING. OUR RESISTANCE MUST INTENSIFY AS WELL! Every year, thousands of people nationwide express their outrage, creativity, and resistance in response to the crimes of this system. People speak out and perform, they march in the streets, and more. The October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality, Repression, and the Criminalization of a Generation embraces and encourages any and all such expressions of people’s righteous outrage.

As said by the mother of Gil Barber, gunned down by a deputy in High Point, NC in 2001, “October 22nd is our day.” ORGANIZE against these injustices! BREAK DOWN the barriers between communities that these crimes seek to strengthen! MOBILIZE people of all communities in the most visible way…

and on October 22, 2011, WEAR BLACK! FIGHT BACK!

Mercenaries in the AZ Desert: Chinga La Migra

Interesting, and not very surprising, unfortunately. Please follow the link for the full article. Brenda Norrell is the best journalist I've seen report on issues related to the indigenous and the border, and she dug into all those Chinga La Migra files herself...

Hacked police data: Assassins plan special ops team on Arizona border

UPDATED: Hacked Arizona police files describe mercenary-type patrols on the Arizona border. However, one of those armed men at the border, responding to the leaked report, said some of the armed patrols are there to halt drug cartels, not to hunt migrants

SASABE, Ariz. -- In the leaked files of Chinga La Migra, a police report describes an encounter with a heavily-armed man at Sasabe and states there is a "mercenary-type" action planned for this area. It is the second time that e-mails leaked by hackers in the Chinga La Migra data revealed heavily-armed mercenary types here at Sasabe, southwest of Tucson. In the first police e-mail leaked, off-duty Marines were exposed patrolling with assault weapons.

In this second e-mail from police files, agents working in the town of Sasabe in March said they were approached by a man who engaged in a conversation with agents.

The agents said they immediately noticed that the man had a Glock pistol holstered on his right hip. The man also retrieved a Saiga shotgun, along with a 10 round magazine and a 20 round drum magazine from his truck and showed the agents.

“He stated that he is soon to receive funding in the amount of $350,000.00 from what he described as ‘Concerned citizens’ and that he planned to use this funding to bring up to five men into the area," the police report states.

The heavily-armed man “went on to describe these men, as well as himself, as prior military, all with extensive experience such as Recon, Sniper and Ranger Training, etc., and plans to conduct mercenary type operations in both the Sasabe, Arizona and Sasabe, Sonora border area," the police report states.

The police report states that he admitted having "Improvised Explosive Devices" deployed in the desert near Sasabe.

Agents were urged to take extreme caution while working in the area near Sasabe. In April, after the man was seen in Sasabe, there was a five hour police search of the area with a bomb crew.

Response: Some armed patrols on the border target drug cartels, not hunting migrants

One person who says he is armed at the Arizona border responded to the original article published here by Censored News, and the data from the Arizona police files.

Responding, the man said he is armed and at the Arizona border, but he is not part of the Minutemen or Blue Lights patrols. Instead, he said he is there to halt the armed cartel drug runners coming north, weapons going south, and for the protection of the communities.

He said the cartel escorts accompanying the drug loads are armed with AK47s. Some of the cartel lookouts on this side of the border are also armed with AK47s. Since it is very desolate country, any help is usually about an hour away, if any help comes at all. So to go out there unarmed is suicide, he said.

He points out that there are corrupt Border Patrol agents on the border and they report people with false information, if they get in the corrupt agents' way.

The corruption within the Border Patrol was the subject of testimony before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs, on June 9, 2011 in Washington. Officials testified that 127 Border Patrol agents have been arrested and hundreds more are now under investigation, for corruption, including drug smuggling and accepting bribes from drug runners.

Responding to Censored News, the person who is armed at the border said he is there to halt drug cartels from coming in, prevent weapons from going south into Mexico and to protect the local area. He said there are good people on the other side of the border in Mexico and they do not deserve to be slaughtered by the drug cartels.

But he said he is not there to hunt migrants. He said he even carries extra water and food for migrants that are left stranded.

He points out that the U.S. government has supplied the cartels with over 2,500 AK/47s.

This fact was revealed in the recent testimony, and news reports, of the ATF Fast and Furious operation. Those ATF weapons in the operation, which the ATF claims were part of a sting operation, are being used on both sides of the border. These weapons that the US was allowing to "walk" across the border were proven to be used in the murder of two US agents, including one agent near Nogales, Ariz.

The Los Angeles Times points out that not only did 2,500 weapons wind up in the hands of the cartels, but the DEA and FBI were paying the same cartel members as informants. “The official said at least half a dozen cartel figures were being paid by one U.S. law enforcement agency while they were being targeted by another.” http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-cartel-guns-20110717,0,6972222.story

Further, responding to Censored News, the armed man patrolling the Arizona border says that Wells Fargo/Wachovia was caught laundering $378 billion of cartel drug money over a period of 4 years, over 90 billion a year. He pointed out that not one criminal charge was brought against them. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/apr/03/us-bank-mexico-drug-gangs

Further, the man patrolling the Arizona border said the intent of the government is not to stop this drug running, but it is to keep it going so there are more people in this country "doped up who can't think straight and will obey whatever they are told." Referring to the US military and drug running, he said: Why do you think we are in Afghanistan?

He said it is because 90 percent of the world’s opium comes from there.

He said by patrolling the mountains at the Arizona border, he is trying to stop the drug trade and not only put a crimp on the cartel cash flow, but also on the U.S. government cash flow and corruption...

MESA "Fraternal Ownage of Police": CHINGA LA MIGRA III.

Here's the latest message from the anarchists who hacked from the Department of Public Safety - this time someone hit the Mesa Fraternal Order of Police. The best analyses I've seen of the records released in all these hacks has been by Brenda Norrell at Censored News - go there now for her take on this particular release - she's evidently been reading through the stuff herself.

  15. For the third knockout blow against Arizona law enforcement, we decided to get
  16. destructive. We're defacing eight AZ Fraternal Order of Police websites and
  17. releasing a master list of over 1200 officer's usernames, passwords, and email
  18. addresses. Additionally we are leaking hundreds of private FOP documents and
  19. several more mail spools belonging to FOP presidents, vice presidents,
  20. secretaries, a police chief, and the FOP Labor Council executive directory and
  21. webmaster whose insecure web development skills was responsible for this whole
  22. mess. We're doing this not only because we are opposed to SB1070 and the racist
  23. Arizona police state, but because we want a world free from police, prisons and
  24. politicians altogether.
  25. In this batch of emails we found more racist email chain emails, including
  26. Springerville's police chief Mike Nuttal forwarding jokes about torturing
  27. "ragheads". FOP president Brandon L Musgrave was also forwarding anti-muslim
  28. emails while also purchasing large amounts of guns, so we're dumping his paypal
  29. and credit card information as well. Other drama includes internal arguments
  30. over FOP positions, disputes over arrested FOP member Michelle Preiss, lots of
  31. crude anti-Obama jokes, and lots lots more. Amusingly we also were reading James

  37. Truth be told we've been passing around this password list amongst our black hat

  40. expose and instill fear into the crooked cops of Arizona. However the list
  41. proved to be too great, and now we are seeking community assistance in going

Hackers without Borders: CHINGA LA MIGRA II.

ANTISEC just released a second dump of data from their hack into the AZ DPS computer system - I was going to post the link, but Stephen Lemons wrote a thoughtful blog post in the Phoenix New Times this week after reviewing some of the records released in the first release, which I didn't read all of myself, and I'm deferring to his concern that innocent people's safety could be compromised by some of the information released.

Nevertheless, these folks have an interesting message. Repeating it doesn't mean I agree with all of it - just that I think it's an important voice to hear. Here's the intro to the latest data dump:

--------------Hackers without Borders----------------

Just when you thought it was over, we're hitting the Arizona police state with our second round of attacks. In our first bulletin we dumped a treasure trove of secret law enforcement documents. In this second bulletin, we're dumping booty pirated from a dozen Arizona police officer's personal email accounts looking specifically for humiliating dirt. This leak has names, addresses, phone numbers, passwords, social security numbers, online dating account info, voicemails, chat logs, and seductive girlfriend pictures belonging to a dozen Arizona police officers. We found more internal police reports, cops forwarding racist chain emails, k9 drug unit cops who use percocets, and a convicted sex offender who was part of FOP Maricopa Lodge Five.

We also hit the AZDPS spokesperson Stephen Harrison who been bragging to the news about how they are upgrading their security and how they will catch the evil hackers who exposed them. Clearly not secure enough, because we owned his personal hotmail, facebook and match.com accounts and dumped all his personal details for the world to see. The same fate will meet anyone else who tries to paint us as terrorists in an Orwellian attempt to pass more pro-censorship or racial-profiling police state laws.

We also found details of Jeff Wilson, a former DPS officer and member of a Navajo tribe, planning on suing the department for racial discrimination charges. Amongst the civil rights violations occuring in AZDPS, Sgt. Jeff Eavenson and others were illegally issuing tickets to Navajos in AZ state court jurisdiction instead of tribal courts. When Jeff Wilson brought these charges up to the department, they punished him and pushed him out of the police force. We welcome Wilson's attempts to expose his racist administrators and so we won't we releasing his info.

Yes we're aware that putting the pigs on blast puts risks their safety, those poor defenseless police officers who lock people up for decades, who get away with brutality and torture, who discriminate against people of color, who make and break their own laws as they see fit. We are making sure they experience just a taste of the same kind of violence and terror they dish out on an every day basis. Our advice to you is to quit while you still can and turn on your commanding officers before you end up in our cross hairs next, because we're not stopping until every prisoner is freed and every prison is burned to the ground.

To other hackers: it's time to set aside our differences and join the antisec popular front against the corrupt governments, corporations, militaries, and law enforcement of the world. We promise you much more bounty to come guaranteed to bring smiles to the faces of all those who have hated the police. Unite and fight, for the flames of revolution burn bright!

Chinga la Migra: AZ DPS Computer Hacked.

A group of apparent anarchists hacked into AZ Law enforcement computers this week and dumped a ton of documents on the internet. Here's the group's intro...

-------CHINGA LA MIGRA BULLETIN #1 6/23/2011-----------

"We are releasing hundreds of private intelligence bulletins, training manuals, personal email correspondence, names, phone numbers, addresses and passwords belonging to Arizona law enforcement. We are targeting AZDPS specifically because we are against SB1070 and the racial profiling anti-immigrant police state that is Arizona.

The documents classified as "law enforcement sensitive", "not for public distribution", and "for official use only" are primarily related to border patrol and counter-terrorism operations and describe the use of informants to infiltrate various gangs, cartels, motorcycle clubs, Nazi groups, and protest movements.

Every week we plan on releasing more classified documents and embarassing personal details of military and law enforcement in an effort not just to reveal their racist and corrupt nature but to purposefully sabotage their efforts to terrorize communities fighting an unjust "war on drugs". Hackers of the world are uniting and taking direct action against our common oppressors - the government, corporations, police, and militaries of the world. See you again real soon!"

------------------

What I've read of the documents is very troubling, but not too surprising, sadly. It just confirms what a fascist, hateful state we have been too long subject to in Arizona. Brenda Norrell at Censored News does a great job of sorting through some of the data and pulling out the important pieces. Check out her blog for the best coverage of indigenous and human rights issues that no one is talking about.

The following post is from her site.

Hacked data reveals US Marines as contract killers, hunting migrants on the border

Friday, June 24, 2011

(Updated on Friday 2 pm: Arpaio tweets)

The hunting and murder of migrants by US Marines along the Arizona border was among the first facts revealed, after LulzSec hacked the Arizona Department of Public Safety on Thursday.

Describing the hacked data, boingboing.net, said, "There are countless mundane documents covering hours worked, officers' personal information and other stuff of minimal journalistic interest. But the bulletins often offer fascinating stories of law enforcement encounters, such as this one with off-duty Marines patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border with assault weapons."

The data describes heavily-armed US Marines, working on contract, to hunt migrants:

"In other incidents reported in October, U.S. Border Patrol agents encountered two subjects who claimed to be members of the Border Watch Group the Blue Lights based on the Caballo Loco Ranch. The subjects, armed with pistols and at least one M4 rifle, were dressed in full desert camouflage uniforms, similar to those of the United States military. They stated they were not members of the Minutemen, but paid contract employees who ‘get the job done’ and ‘were not just volunteers.’ They possessed valid United States Marine Corps identification cards."

A large percentage of the migrants in the Arizona border region are Indigenous Peoples from Central and South America, including many Mayan women and children from Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guatemala. Murders and rapes by the US military, Arizona law enforcement, the US Border Patrol and anti-immigration groups and other hate groups, are often ignored or concealed.

As it released the hacked data, Lulz Security said in a statement, “We are targeting AZDPS specifically because we are against SB1070 and the racial profiling anti-immigrant police state that is Arizona.”

“Every week we plan on releasing more classified documents and embarrassing personal details of military and law enforcement in an effort not just to reveal their racist and corrupt nature but to purposefully sabotage their efforts to terrorize communities fighting an unjust ‘war on drugs.’”

Arizona officials confirmed on Thursday that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Twitter account received a message from LulzSec, after Arpaio complained of heat from the media on Thursday.

"The media has been giving me a lot of heat lately but nothing compared to tent city! You think you're hot? It's 128 degrees there today!" said Arpaio, who uses the name of RealSheriffJoe on Twitter.

Lulzsec responded, "Media? Heat? You? Chinga La Migra!" using the Spanish words for "F--k the Border Patrol."

Arpaio continued to tweet away on Friday, announcing that he would be speaking to the Gun Owners of America tonight in Reno. Yesterday, after Lulzsec's tweet, Arpaio said he met yesterday with Brazilian Counsel General Jose Alfredo Garicia Lima. Arpaio said "illegal immigration" was among the issues discussed.

As the data was slowly released on Thursday night, Arizona human rights activists waited to learn more about police spying on peaceful protests by immigration and border rights activists.

Tagged "SB 1070 Protests and Civil Disobedience," the data is a bulletin from the Arizona Counter-Terrorism Information Center. The bulletin states that police were watching demonstrators from Tucson, Phoenix and Flagstaff as they prepared for civil disobedience in reaction to SB 1070 on July 26-31, 2010. However, the bulletin also points out the non-violent nature of the July 22 act of civil disobedience at the courthouse in Phoenix. It also states that counterprotesters at events thus far were non-violent.

On the subject of racial profiling, boingboing.net concludes, "Even after controlling for other explanatory factors, racial/ethnic disparities exist for warnings, repair orders, citations, arrests and seaches. Further analyses of searches and seizures illustrate that hispanic, black and native american drivers were significantly more likely to be searched compared to whites." (This report was previously made public in regards to Native Americans being racially profiled by Arizona law enforcement.)

There is also an admission about the intent of an officer for police brutality. It follows a guide to social networking sites which cautions officers not to boast about beating arrestees on Facebook, because that may be of use to defense attorneys, according to boingboing.net.

One of the notable postings introduced to the jury was that the officer watched the movie "Training Day" (a motion picture that displayed corrupt police behavior and brutality) to brush up on "proper police procedure." One of his postings said, "If he wanted to tune him up some, he should have delayed cuffing him." In another he added, "If you were going to hit a cuffed suspect, at least get your money's worth 'cause now he's going to get disciplined for a relatively light punch."

Meanwhile in Arizona, O’odham and other Native Americans continue to call for an end to the militarization of the border and their homelands. Indigenous rights activists continue to document the abuses of the US Border Patrol in their homelands, from California to Texas.

In Arizona, border rights activists continue to search the Sonoran Desert for those dying and dead, and battle for the right to legally give water to dying migrants on the Tohono O’odham Nation.

While the United States provides media spin to avoid responsibility for the drug war in Mexico, the fact is there would be no drug war without the appetite for illegal drugs in the US.

Recently it was also revealed that the weapons used in the violent drug war come not just from illegal weapons trafficking in the US, but also from the ATF. ATF agents revealed that they were ordered to let weapons “walk” across the border into Mexico, supposedly in sting operations. Ultimately those ATF weapons, in at least two cases, were used to kill US federal agents.

Further, the US has not fully disclosed its role in training members of the Zetas who were initially US Special Forces trained in the US.

In related news, the Southern Poverty Law Center revealed that a neo-Nazi accused of making illegal explosive devices apparently was interested in supplying those munitions to anti-immigration groups patrolling the U.S.-Mexican border in Arizona, according to court documents. Jeffery Harbin, a member of the white supremacist National Socialist Movement, was allegedly building homemade grenades and pipe bombs at home.

A federal grand jury indicted Harbin, 28, of Apache Junction, Ariz., on three counts of possessing explosive devices in January.

One area heavily patrolled by anti-immigration and hate groups, and a site of their camps, is along the eastern boundary line of the Tohono O'odham Nation, between Three Points and Sasabe.
