"This video shows students in Arizona defending themselves as they are attacked mercilessly on the State Senate floor.

These are some of the young protesters that showed up at our State Capitol in February and March of 2011. Are they gangsters?

You decide for yourself.

This year, Russell Pearce and other Republicans pushed beyond SB 1070 by introducing numerous bills from denying newborn babies their human rights under the 14th Amendment to requiring all school and hospital officials to act as ICE agents.


In a bizarre attempt to sell these bills, racist attacks are made from the Senate floor against Hispanic students lowering the bar for hateful, racist rhetoric even in Arizona. Tom Horne shows up at the Capitol and is quick to call the young protesters thugs in a press release days later. You would think an educated man like Attorney General Tom Horne could tell the difference between thugs. I took the liberty to show Tom Horne what people act like that have never taken Ethnic Studies.

5 of the 26 anti-immigrant bills were voted down due to The Phoenix Chamber of Commerce's pressure on a handful of Republicans. The business community made it clear the current boycotts over 1070 have hurt the economy and they want no more anti-immigration laws passed.


But don't think for one minute we won anything.

While education and health care were cut drastically, millions of dollars of additional money will go to private prisons. There are so many moronic, unconstitutional and racist bills floating around, I simply can't go into all of them.

Arizona has over 117,000 millionaires under-taxed while the rest of us are barely surviving. Maricopa County ranks 5th in the Nation. They are never asked to pay their fair share while drastic and dangerous cuts are made everywhere else."

In Arizona, the hateful bills never stop. They never will as long as Russell Pearce is in power.

SB 1070 Resistance: Posada Celebration and holiday drive

The Sound Strike Announces Toy and Food Drive for Arizona families.

To our fellow organizations and supporters,

I'm writing to ask for your support for a family event on Dec.18th.
Many children in Arizona will not be with their parents this holiday season due to unjust detentions, deportations and family separation. Many of these children are being cared for by friends, family and neighbors and live far below the poverty line.

On December 18, 2010 in Phoenix, AZ The Sound Strike will join local organizations for a traditional Posada Celebration with families suffering from immigrant attacks.

This event is being organized by PUENTE to address the needs of immigrant families while affirming their commitment to overturn SB 1070 and bring about reasonable immigration policies in Arizona.
The Sound Strike has committed close to $20,000 to help purchase staple foods and gifts for children and their families. But the need is much greater and we need your help.

Here is how you or your organization can get involved:

1. Make a donation to the toy or food drive,
2. Help us collect donations by setting up a drop off location in your office,
3. Travel with us (at your own expense) to help package and the deliver gifts and food, and/or
4. Spread the word to your membership and social network.

Brown Shirts in the House and the Tea Party Senate.

This little tidbit about our own Tea Party Senate President-Elect, Russ Pearce, comes as no surprise to those of us who know and love him. Thank god Tancredo lost Colorado, by the way - at least there's one piece of good news coming out of the elections last week. JT Ready and his kin have a lot to celebrate in Arizona this year, though. The National Socialist Movement is coming back to the Capitol in Phoenix on Saturday November 13th, I hear - they'll be at the Federal Courthouse at 1pm for their rally and march...well protected by the boys in blue, I'm sure.

I may be too tied up with the real Fascists here to go out and play with them, myself, though. They all strike me as little bullies playing dress-up. Not that they're harmless - remember the River City Pool Hall Murder and other violence when Unit 88 was running amok here. Those are the kinds of thugs we should be keeping a close eye on for signs of trouble - not sidewalk chalkers and anarchists (both the neo-nazis and the good Senator...). If you're free that day, why not go help run them out of town?

Candidates Tied to White Nationalism Gain Ground in 2010 Elections

With 96 members as of 2010, the House Immigration Reform Caucus ^[1] (IRC) was founded by Tom Tancredo, a xenophobic politician from Colorado who passed the reigns to Brian Bilbray of California, another politician fiercely hostile to immigrants, after an ill-fated run for President in 2007. Bilbray is a former lobbyist ^[1] for the Federation for American Immigration Reform ^[2], an organization which is listed as a hate group ^[3] by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its ties to white nationalists.

Tom Tancredo’s run for governor of Colorado in 2010 was unsuccessful as well. He lost by a 13% margin to Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. Bilbray (incumbent) won the California Congressional District 50 House Seat with 59% of the vote. All members of the IRC are incumbents of their Congressional Districts and most have been re-elected for another term. These include Rep. Steve King (IA-5, 66%), Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-1, unopposed), Eric Cantor (VA-7, 59%), Vern Buchanan (FL-13, 69%), Michele Bachmann (MN-6, 50%).

Losses include Parker Griffith (AL-5, defeated in primary) and Lincoln Davis (TN-5, 38%).

State Legislators for Legal Immigration ^[4] (SLLI) is a coalition founded by Pennsylvania Rep. Darryl Metcalfe. SLLI which is the legislative arm of Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) works closely with the Immigration Reform Law Institute ^[5], the legal arm of FAIR, to pass punitive immigration laws at the state level. Almost 50 members of SLLI – out of 70 – were up for reelection in 2010, a good number of which ran unopposed. A majority of SLLI members will be back for another term.

A well-known member of SLLI is Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce ^[6] (AZ-18). Pearce gained notoriety for being the public face of the controversial Senate Bill 1070, and is now spearheading attacks on the 14^th Amendment. Pearce’s is openly tied to neo-Nazis in Arizona. This ^[7] is a picture of Pearce in 2007 with a man named J.T. Ready. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, J.T. Ready is a neo-Nazi leader in the National Socialist Movement.

IRC and SLLI, two groups with hostile views towards immigrants, have been flirting with white nationalists for too long. These election results show that voters are either unaware of this fact or indifferent to it, and that needs to change. This is not the time to bury our heads in the sand (like the ostrich) while white nationalists shape the debate around immigration. It’s time to get educated and proactive in the fight against xenophobia.

I think I got dropped off his mailing list after this, since I didn't get any updates. Anyway, if you love liberty and justice, don't vote for any of his recommended people. And don't vote for him!

Here's the latest from the Russell Pearce Campaign. Anyone who embraces that man's endorsements right now should be considered by the People to be armed and dangerous and not to be trusted with our tax dollars, much less our laws, lives and liberties. Those who voted for SB 1070 despite not supporting it fully are just as bad, if not worse. They voted from a place of fear, rather than their value base. That means they can't be trusted even if they sound like they might be enlightened.

Note how many of the candidates he endorses have issues with their "constitutionals". That should tell us something. Also note the line of BS he spews about lefty "special interests" (like the poor, the hungry, undocumented immigrants, and peace activists, I suppose?) having "deeper pockets" than his crowd. He feeds that to his own people, you know. They have no idea what the truth is anymore. Perhaps they don't really care.

We've seen your money, Pearce, and we know that your strategy has always been to win by having the biggest bankroll and excluding your opposition from running or even voting in the primaries - it has certainly not been by building a constituency that's authentically dedicated to true democracy. Real Republicans like my grandfather would be ashamed to be seen in the same party with the likes of you - too bad so many of the brave ones are now dead, and the cowards are in hiding, fearing for their political lives.

Our State Legislative Races

Every two years, self-described moderates, open-border groups, and liberal big-spending interest groups join together to raise a lot of money to support center-left candidates for legislative office. Recently, one big fundraising event raised a reported $275,000 for a group of 12 Republican and Democrat candidates. The fact that these Republicans and Democrats were similar enough in their ideology and records that they were willing to campaign together, or that donors found them all equally attractive, is a serious warning about how far left they will go if elected or re-elected. So this handy list has been prepared to help conservatives all over Arizona learn about conservatives running in key races. We have also included their mailing addresses and committee names so that you can make your own contributions. While our pockets are not as deep as the special interests we are up against, we have the advantage of numbers. Get involved, as donors or volunteers, and let’s keep our Arizona State Legislature conservative!

Sweet Honey in The Rock: Are We A Nation?

Check out Sweet Honey in the Rock's new video, "Are We A Nation" - it's awesome. The organization that's sponsoring it helped drive the supported housing movement for people with mental illness when I developed my program in Ann Arbor in the 90's - they're a fantastic resource.

Beware my anarchist friends - this has a real patriotic flavor, but it's a lot better than "America the Beautiful" or "The Star Spangled Banner", it recalls the truth of our collective history, and it puts the greedy racist pigs running Arizona to shame. It's also good to dance to.

Fascists, White Supremacists dominate AZ Republican Primaries.

The Fascists all but swept the Republican Primaries here last night, and in most of their strongholds the Democrats won't have much chance come November. We're still holding out hope that the corrupt Andrew Thomas loses to the incompetent Tom Horne, but overall, it's a bleak Wednesday morning in Phoenix.


Having no tv is a good excuse to get out and about on a night like last night, so I brought my "Bury Hep C..." signs with me to the AZ GOP Party HQ to witness the tragedy unfold. It was far worse than I expected. It looks like many of my friends took one step closer to spending the next few years in an Arizona state prison, all for the love of Food Not Bombs, music under the bridge, and sidewalk chalk. Freedom of expression and human rights will soon be tossed out of the back seat by Thomas' Law and Arpaio's disorder.


I was pleading more than protesting with my signs to fight Hep C , standing quietly across the street. When I saw what was happening on their big screen - and in the audience of small people - I thought it would be foolish to be caught disrupting the occasion without my own witnesses. The media was out in full force, of course, but seemed to be thoroughly co-opted. With the exception of a few words of encouragement from parting celebrants, I was virtually ignored.

The scene at the Republican's party - ringed by MCSO deputies - was truly disturbing. I had to close my eyes and imagine that it was just a bloodbath between klansmen and skinheads, as whomever was left standing would likely still go on to try to destroy the rest of us.


Huppenthal - chair of the Senate Education Committee that brutalized teachers and children last year - may be the next State Superintendent. They're moving in for the kill with the kids.


Unless there's a Libertarian coup in November, the Maricopa County Attorney's office is actually losing Romley to Arpaio's buddy, Bill Montgomery. I never thought I'd be sorry to see that guy go so quickly, but I think darker days are ahead.


Whoever went up against Russ Pearce didn't stand a chance in hell, of course - I haven't even trolled the internet to find out if there was some miraculous upset in his race. He wasn't to be seen in Phoenix, as far as I could tell - I suspected he was celebrating in Mesa with Tea Partiers, Neo-Nazis, and the other white supremacists out there.


Most troubling, perhaps, is that last nights winners didn't come out of far right field without a lot of help from the "center". These people were the official nominees of their party. The crowd unabashedly cheered Arpaio and Thomas (whose race remains too close to call) as they slapped each other's backs and smiled for the cameras without another protester in sight.


The list goes on and will be verified and complete to be pondered over by pundits soon enough. Suffice it to say, it looks like it's about to get a whole lot worse in this state before it gets better, so watch each other's backs out there, my friends. SB 1070 is what brought these people their victories last night. This may have been the Summer of Human Rights, but this fall will undoubtedly see some ethnic and political cleansing in a Season of Hate as this Republican slate solidifies their base by doing what they do best: demonizing unions and immigrants, incarcerating the poor for profit, and dismembering the traitors in their own ranks.


We can certainly hope that the legions of registered Republicans who voted for the lesser of their many evils will join the Democrats and the independent voters in an upset in November - it would suggest that we finally have a more progressive electorate, if nothing else.


For my part, though, even with a Democratic sweep I don't expect the oppressed to be liberated by any part of this political machine. Instead, I pray for revolution. Perhaps this blatant horror will be precisely what we need in order to unshackle our own feet, free our own neighbors, and take back both the land and the resources for the people and other living beings whose ancestors long pre-dated the Anglo invasion.

She's had to cancel tour plans and has incurred major expenses as a result of this situation. She does have health insurance, but she's already had to pay $6,000 just for co-pays and all that junk. Jim Page in the Northeast

Certainly one of the greatest songwriters in the English language as well as a phenomenal fingerstyle guitarist, Seattle's Jim Page, is making a rare foray to the northeastern US in September. He could definitely use more gigs, and now's the time to contact him if you're interested. His website is www.jimpage.net. You won't find Jim's music properly represented on the internet in terms of many free downloads and such, but if you run any kind of venue or house concert series in the northeast I promise you will not be disappointed if you have Jim do a show – he is a jaw-droppingly good songwriter, and very political (though his love songs are also amazing). There are only a few others on the planet who come close to Jim as far as I'm concerned. Have I made myself clear...? If you can't organize a show for him, you will at least want to drive hours to hear him perform – it will be worth it.

Mark Spencer, president of the police union in Phoenix, where officers are already allowed to call immigration officials, said crime has dropped.

"It’s not based upon race. It’s based upon conduct," Spencer said. "The clear connection between those statistics is the crime of illegal immigration. We needed to be proactive [and use] common sense."

Support for similar legislation has spilled into Texas, and some state lawmakers plan to make a push for a law in January.

"We’ve got to secure our borders. We’ve got to do what is necessary to make sure that the safety and security of the citizens of Texas is well-established," State Rep. Debbie Riddle (R-Tomball) said.

Opponents of such a law are already gearing up for a fight.

"We don’t believe that any collaboration with immigration and police should take place, because police are already overwhelmed with the criminals," Cesar Espinosa of Houston’s America For All said.

But would an Arizona-style law make Houston’s streets safer?

Houston’s police union is studying the numbers.

"If you look at the drastic reductions in homicides and auto theft crimes that occurred in Phoenix, I mean, we’d be stupid not to look into those things," Gary Blankinship of the Houston Police Officers’ Union said.

So far, the police union hasn’t declared an official position on whether Arizona’s law would be a good fit for Texas.

There were plenty of believers at the meeting Thursday, but it was just the first of many conversations on immigration reform ahead of the state’s next legislative session.

SB 1070 Resistance Dancin' in the Streets!

This is long and a few days late (so I know I'm not stealing anyone's audience), but it's such a joyful Feathered Bastard that I still can't resist. There's a tune I've been listening to lately called "The Great Stone Wall" by Jim Page, that reminds me that things haven't always been so dark, so bitter, and so hateful on this planet as it seems to be here and now some days. We're so indoctrinated to the way things are that we fail to understand that things haven't always been this way - and its not the only way for them to be tomorrow, either. Ordinary people really can change the world.

Now, read on about the all night party outside of Sheriff Joe's jail while supporters waited for civil rights organizer Sal Reza to be released after his second arrest last week. And hit Stephen's blog (this week's is too funny) at the Phoenix New Times often for updates on what's happening in this place. Between the protests, parties, patrols, prisoners, people power (check out Guadalupe's resistance, too, folks), and my own personal battles (as well as the theft of my laptop from my home), I can't begin to tell you myself what's going on from day to day. So, I'm going to keep hitting up the New Times until they tell me to stop.

Enjoy the Feathered Bastard now, knowing that no matter what the mainstream media reports and pollsters tell you about popular opinion in Arizona, Sheriff Joe is eating a lot of crow these days - spoonfed by people of every age, color and creed. And PLEASE - regardless of anything else you hear, beg Natalie Merchant and all those superstars heading to the Dodge Theater this month to cancel their engagements - we need their moral support more than their money now more than ever. Tell them to come join the people dancing in the streets.

Salvador Reza Released, Prosecutor Admits No Probable Cause for Arrest

As civil rights leader Salvador Reza stood in stripes before a night court judge around 3:30 a.m. this morning at the Fourth Avenue Jail in downtown Phoenix, the county prosecutor made an eye-popping admission.

"This is really my review," he stated cautiously of a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office before him. "I did not see that this rose to the level of probable cause."

Reza's attorney Robert Pastor immediately pounced.

"Your honor," said Pastor, "I just heard the prosecutor tell the court that there's not enough evidence here to suggest that Mr. Reza committed a crime. I ask that the charge be dismissed and he be released immediately."

Of Reza's bogus charge for "obstructing a judicial proceeding," the judge herself seemed skeptical.

"I do not have enough information to find probable cause in this matter, sir," she told the county attorney.

She declined to dismiss the charge, but she released Reza on his own recognizance and set his next court date for August 18.

Reza, leader of the organization Puente, had been arrested late Friday afternoon after watching a band of protesters engage in civil disobedience by blocking Sheriff Joe Arpaio's command post for the MCSO's latest anti-immigrant sweep. The post was located near 35th Avenue and Lower Buckeye, close to the Lower Buckeye Jail. Reza was across the street in an unpaved parking lot.

Though Reza was not participating in civil disobedience that day, a pack of aggro sheriff's deputies ran across 35th Avenue and arrested him. Arpaio, MCSO Chief Brian Sands, and MCSO flack Brian Lee have all been videotaped stating that the arrest was because Reza had violated his order of release after he'd been let go on bond the night before for taking part in civil disobedience on July 29. This, as part of a "national day of non-compliance" to SB 1070.

After court was adjourned with Reza's O.R., a crowd of about sixty supporters, who had crammed into a viewing room to watch the proceedings from a TV monitor, erupted into applause. They then filed outside to wait another two hours-plus before Reza and the others arrested that day were set free.

Supporters danced all night waiting for Reza to be let go

The main entrance to the Fourth Avenue Jail had turned into an all-night block party for Reza supporters, with speakers blaring cumbia and protesters dancing in the middle of the street, sometimes in the pouring rain. At one point the crowd of Reza supporters numbered more than 100, and included numerous members of Unitarian Universalist Churches (referred to as "UUs") from across the country, who were in town to protest SB 1070 going into effect.

Sheriff's deputies and detention officers looked on from the roof, and from the corners of the building, but did nothing to stop the crowd. I asked one deputy why he and his compadres were seemingly okay with the revelry.

He simply shrugged and said, "It's a free country."

Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, was present in a parking lot with Reza as sheriff's deputies arrested the longtime anti-Arpaio activist. He said NDLON regarded Reza as a political prisoner, and that in the first two hours of putting up an online petition to "Free Sal Reza," NDLON had garnered 900 signers-on.

"They arrested him for no reason," he told me, as we all awaited Reza's release. "He was doing nothing. They just took him. To me it's clear that it's retaliation, because he's been highly critical of the sheriff. They [Arpaio and his staff] don't like him. They hate him."

Indeed, Reza has led several massive marches aimed directly at ending Arpaio's rule, as well as daily protests outside the Wells Fargo Building in downtown Phoenix, where Arpaio keeps two floors of pricey executive offices. Reza's Wells Fargo campaign ended with the bank asking Arpaio to leave, forcing the county to find another building for the MCSO, which Arpaio will likely move into sometime in 2011.

No one parties like a Unitarian...

When Reza finally emerged from jail Saturday morning, the sun was up, and his fellow activists were overjoyed to see him.

Reza said he was shocked by the arrest, which came without warning, just as he was about to leave for an interview.

"When I saw them coming, I thought they were coming for the people in the street," he explained. "But then they just passed them and went for me."

Regarding who actually ordered his arrest, Reza believes it was MCSO Deputy Chief Brian Sands, one of Arpaio's top henchmen, a man who looks like he would have felt right at home in the KGB.

"It was Sands," Reza contended. "Sands was in command."

MSCO thugs hustled a cuffed Reza to a van, where he remained for hours by himself. At one point, the MCSO opened up the van to display Reza to photographers and journalists like a captured prisoner of war.

NDLON's Sarahi Uribe said there were feces on the floor of the holding cell she was in

"If they can do this to me," he told the reporters present before refusing interviews, "what do you expect they can do to anybody else."

Reza was transported to Fourth Avenue, booked, and forced to change into county stripes. As he was the night before, he was placed in solitary confinement. Reza said he was allowed no phone call, and there was no phone in the cell. He also stated that deputies never read him his Miranda rights.

I asked if he thought the MCSO was trying to break him.

"I think it's going to be a long time before they break me," he laughed. "I was ready to go eighteen days...that's when the court date is."

I wondered if he planned to sue the MCSO, as so many of Arpaio's victims have done, earning massive payouts from county coffers. Reza didn't say yea or nay.

"I just wish the [ U.S. Department of Justice] would get on the ball and do something about it," he replied. "I don't know what else they want...It's very clear."

The DOJ has been investigating Arpaio for more than a year now for civil rights violations. There's also a federal grand jury in Phoenix looking into Arpaio and the MCSO for criminal abuse of power.

Concerning the detention officers, Reza said he actually got along with some this time.

"Some of them are nice," he said. "Some of them, they basically don't like Arpaio."

This sentiment was echoed to some degree by Sarahi Uribe, a Yale graduate and organizer with NDLON, who'd been one of the protesters blocking sheriff's patrol cars from leaving for the sweep. She, too, was released on her own recognizance by the judge.

"One of the clerks or one of the officers inside slapped a message on the window [of the cell] that said, `By the way, what you guys are doing is awesome,' and walked away," Uribe told me.

Still, she was interrogated repeatedly by 287(g) officers in the jail, even though she's an American citizen. This, likely because she's not white and she initially refused to tell them her country of origin.

She also described "disgusting" conditions in the holding cell where she was kept with several other women. Uribe said women were sleeping on a floor littered with feces. Like Reza, she was never Mirandized.

Before he headed out to get some much needed rest, I asked Reza if he had any words for Sheriff Arpaio.

"Yeah," he said. "Come back to civilization."

Fat chance of that. They don't call it "Mari-Kafka County" for nothin'. For those of you reading who loathe Reza because of his politics, keep this in mind: There was no probable cause for his arrest. And if you want Arizona to resemble part of America, rather than a Third World junta, you should denounce his detention just as if you were one of his supporters.

BOYCOTT HATE! Don't patronize this State!!!

Here's another shout out from an active reader, responding to the previous post from Democracy Now's coverage of the SB 1070 protests. That post was put up there for me by my comrade in the Netherlands, since I've been too busy moving, protesting, cop-watching, agitating our Neo-nazis, getting burglarized, and going to prison these past few days to do much of anything with these blogs myself. That's why I have back-up (thank you, dear friend).

Tonight I have a band to go see at Conspire Phoenix, so, sorry all - check out my links to the blogs above for someone else's local radical coverage - all I can say now is that while there are some awesome people here, there's still an abundance of free-flowing nastiness and hate swaggering around this state. These people should be shamed back into donning white hoods, but instead they're running for political office on platforms that promise to erode both the Bill of Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They'll probably get elected, too, unless some more good citizens move here and register to vote before the deadline. It's pretty troubling what's been going on down here.

Thanks for your contribution, Montana. Hope the rest of you are boycotting us, America - that's the only reason this place finally decided to honor Martin Luther King Day. More on that issue later this week...right now I need a break from this ugly place.

We are a country that is ruled by the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence, not by the majority of the day. When you do not know the principles in these documents, therein lays the problem in losing when you are challenged in court.

This month of July 2010, our U.S. Federal courts have found the so called State of Arizona hate filled legislation namely "House Bill 2013" and "SB1070" Un-constitutional (So much for the intellect of Jan Brewer, "Did you read the bills you signed?"). But we all know that they will go crying to the Supreme Court of the United States, please, please, please go. We will fight you in Arizona, any other state, and yes, in Washington DC. We will not tire, we will not be silent and we will persevere, I promise you.

In my opinion the Republican Party has been taken over the most extreme of clans; the Baggers, Birthers and Blowhards (people who love to push their beliefs and hate on others while trying to take away the rights of those they just hate) and that's who they need to extract from their party if they really want to win in November. Good Luck, because as they said in WACO, "We Ain't Coming Out".

It's all about politics: Jan Brewer you were never elected to be Governor, but you have no problem trying to get elected on the backs of undocumented workers, you loser (sure, you may win, but the long-term effects to your so-called state is just beginning). Here is a partial list of your hate-filled legislation;

1. S.B. 1070,

2. House Bill 2013

3. No permit concealed weapons law,

4. The famous Birthers law,

5. Banning Ethnic studies law,

6. Could she be behind the Mural in Prescott, Arizona, ordered to be whiten,

7. On deck to pass, no citizenship to babies born to undocumented workers,

8. If she can read she should look up Arizona's House Bill 2779 from two years ago (which was un-constitutional and failed when legally challenged),

9. The boycotted Martin Luther King Day. What idiots don't want another holiday? Yes, you guessed it: Arizona.

Well Arizona, you can keep boycotting new holidays and passing hate-filled legislation, and the rest of our country will continue to challenge you in the court of law and boycott your so-called state.

Lets face it, no one can really believe anything that comes out of Brewer's mouth. In an interview, this year, in an attempt to gain sympathy, she said her father had died in Germany fighting the Nazi in World War II (which ended in 1945), but of course we find out the truth that her father was never in Germany and died in California in 1955. But we are supposed to believe everything else she says, right?

Democracy Now: about July 29th 2010 in Arizona

JUAN GONZALEZ: We go now to Arizona, where Wednesday’s federal ruling temporarily blocking key provisions of that state’s notorious anti-immigrant law, Senate Bill 1070, has done nothing to quell the fierce debate around immigration. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer swiftly appealed the ruling by US District Judge Susan Bolton, politicians in eighteen states said they wanted to push similar measures, and protesters rallied from coast to coast demonstrating against the Arizona law.

In Phoenix, hundreds came out early Thursday morning to protest and stage civil disobedience actions. This is Sharon Lungo, one of the hundreds of demonstrators who arrived in a caravan from California to protest in the streets of Phoenix.

SHARON LUNGO: Yesterday’s ruling was not a victory. It was a compromise. It doesn’t represent the dignity that people here are representing today by taking the streets, by putting themselves on the line, by putting themselves at risk, to tell the people of this world that we deserve human rights, that all people deserve human rights, that borders are—they’re political lines that are drawn by other people.

JUAN GONZALEZ: At least fifty people were arrested by federal officers, Phoenix police officers and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s deputies. Among those arrested were civil rights leader Salvador Reza of the organization Puente, former State Senate majority leader Alfredo Gutierrez, and two legal observers—attorneys Sunita Patel of the Center for Constitutional Rights and Roxana Orrell of the National Lawyers Guild. In addition, longtime Arizona Republic photographer Dave Seibert was detained and handcuffed for two hours.

Ernesto Lopez was among several demonstrators who chained themselves to the Phoenix jail.

ERNESTO LOPEZ: I’m not too happy about Arpaio being out in the community today. I’m not too happy about Obama sending troops down to the border. And it doesn’t look like reform is going to happen anytime soon. So we felt like we had to do something to make Obama listen—not just Obama, not just Arpaio and Jan Brewer, everybody listen—and that laws like SB 1070 are not—are not just, and we don’t want them anymore, and not just in Arizona, but these types of things are happening all over the state, all over the country. And we’re fed up.

AMY GOODMAN: Meanwhile, here in New York, hundreds marched across the Brooklyn Bridge in a solidarity march on Thursday morning.

PROTESTERS: Up with the people! Yeah, yeah! I say up with the people! Yeah, yeah! I say down with the system!

LETICIA ALANIS: I’m Leticia Alanis from the organization La Unión in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. I think it’s important that everybody raise their voices against SB 1070 and all other bills that try to criminalize immigrants. Immigrants are our friends, our co-workers, our neighbors, and they contribute to this country, so we should stand up now and really recognize their contributions.

KEVIN DAVIS: Hi. My name is Kevin Davis. I’m actually a youth organizer for the Ya-Ya Network, which is Youth Activists-Youth Allies. Honestly, we’re all one country, and we’re all united, so the fact that one state is hurting, all of us are hurting, and the fact that one race is hurting, all of us are hurting.

CLEMENTINA: Well, I’m Clementina from Vamos Unidos. We are here to support our brothers and sisters from Arizona. SB 1070 affects us everywhere. We started to see, as street vendors here in New York, when as soon as the law was implied over there in Arizona, a week later they were asking us for our immigration status to renew our vendor’s license or take our vendor’s license.

MONAMI MAULIK: So, my name is Monami Maulik, and I am the executive director of DRUM. DRUM stands for Desis Rising Up and Moving. Whatever happens in Arizona, those same anti-immigrant policies find their way up all throughout the United States. For the last ten years, Arizona has been a testing ground for the harshest anti-immigrant policies. And so, for example, the Governor of New York State signed Secure Communities already in New York, which has not yet gone into effect, but will, and when it does, it will funnel thousands more into deportation. Just across the river, the Governor has signed the 287(g) program, authorizing police officers to arrest people based on immigration status. So, we feel that Arizona, maybe that law is not happening here, but there are many other harsh anti-immigrant deportation provisions that our communities are feeling right here in New York City.

SARAH: My name is Sarah, and I’m part of the Boycott Arizona, New York City committee. We had a press conference for support Resolution 0224 at City Hall this Tuesday. The Resolution 0224 is a declaring of an official boycott against Arizona state, and that would mean any business travel that would be going in Arizona would be barred, anyone from here going there. Municipal bonds would not be accepted from Arizona. Also conventions and any type of business, we just would not—we would not hold any business with Arizona.

AMY GOODMAN: Pro-immigrant rights activists who walked over the Brooklyn Bridge yesterday here in New York, interviewed by Nicole Salazar and Andalusia Knoll.

This is Democracy Now!, democracynow.org, as we turn now to—back to Phoenix to Carlos Garcia, the lead organizer for the Puente Movement.

Welcome to Democracy Now! Can you talk about what happened yesterday in Arizona and where you’re going from here, Carlos?

CARLOS GARCIA: Sure. Yesterday was a very intense day here in Phoenix, Arizona. We had eighty-three people arrested in total, in three different sites: three at a federal courthouse, fifty in front of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s offices, and thirty shutting down Arpaio’s jail. Also, five individuals were arrested the day before.

We had one great accomplishment yesterday. Because of our actions, we were able to postpone Sheriff Arpaio’s sweep of our community, meaning families were not separated and the community was not terrorized, at least for the period of time that we were protesting.

And in the solidarity actions that happened across the country, I think the message was heard loud and clear, that we will not put up with what is left of SB 1070, we’ll not put up with Sheriff Joe Arpaio, not put up with 287(g) or Secure Communities.

I think, moving forward here in Phoenix, what we’re doing is really concentrating on organizing our community, building what we’re calling "barrio defense committees," committees that will in turn help us strategize and fight back against future bills like SB 1070 and politicians like Russell Pearce and Joe Arpaio.

JUAN GONZALEZ: Carlos Garcia, there’s been some uncertainty in terms of the boycott situation. I know that US Representative Raúl Grijalva, immediately after the court decision, called for an end to the boycott. What is—of Arizona. What’s your position on that issue?

CARLOS GARCIA: We are remaining strong that we need to continue to boycott Arizona, not only because of the pieces left in 1070, but also what Sheriff Joe Arpaio is continuing to do here in Arizona. I don’t know if folks understand that yesterday laws, new laws, came into effect with 1070 that, the day before that, we did not have. We now have to deal with anti-solicitation bill that are targeting day laborers. Municipalities and police agencies are forced to work under federal enforcement. It’s what they call the anti-sanctuary city piece. And then we have really concern in a law that’s coming into effect with SB 1070 in regards to transportation and harboring, that can make it a crime if someone is driving or housing an undocumented person. The question we have with that is, is anyone that enters your home or that you’re giving a ride to, are you going to have to ask for their passport, or else people will then be liable for criminal charges? So I think the pieces that were left of SB 1070 are really intense, and folks are failing to see that, yes, it could have been a lot worse with the pieces that were taken out, but it’s still a really bad situation with the new law of SB 1070.

AMY GOODMAN: Carlos Garcia, will your protests continue?

CARLOS GARCIA: Our protests will continue. We will continue to organize in our community. And if yesterday we were able to accomplish in stopping Joe Arpaio because of individuals that are going to be able to maybe be detained one or two days and then released, if that’s going to mean stopping deportations or long-term detention or people being separated from their families, then we really have to consider, as a community here in Arizona, to start doing that.

- At 10 AM on Saturday, July 24th, Immigration Attorney Mo Goldman will speak about the U.S. immigration process and answer relevant questions. This event will take place at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 749 E. 11th (intersects at D Ave). (Presentation in English with Spanish Translation)

below are the many ways you can participate in opposing SB1070. As most of you already know, the law is to take effect on Thursday, July 29th. There are lots of things happening in Phoenix over the next week or so. Please forward this e-mail to everyone you know, get out, get involved, voice your outrage!

Represent NMD...wear your NMD t-shirts to these actions!

1. Wednesday, July 21: Training on Non-Violence and Civil Disobedience - 6:00pm

LOCATION: Phoenix Quaker Meeting House (1702 E. Glendale, 17th Street and Glendale)

If you are planning to participate in the National Day of Non-Compliance on the 29th and want to know about the realities of CD, you should come to this training! Get the facts, know your rights, be trained.

2. Thursday, July 22: Injuncion Hearing Against SB1070 - 9:00am

LOCATION: Sandra Day O'Conner Courthouse (401 W. Washington)

This is the day that many of the suits against the Law are being heard. Come to protest outside the courthouse all morning! Bring signs, sunscreen and water!

3. Saturday, July 24: Policing the Police Training - 2-4:00pm

LOCATION: Unlimited Potential (6520 S. Central Ave, three blocks south of Southern)

Sheriff Arpaio has promised to hold another racial profiling sweep on July 29th and/or 30th, as soon as SB 1070 goes into effect. We need to have dozens of volunteers out on the street to monitor and document the activities of the sheriff's deputies on those days. Attend one of these trainings and learn how to safely and legally observe the police during this sweep and in your own neighborhood.

4. Saturday, July 24: Diamondbacks Boycott and Protest - 4:30pm

LOCATION: Meet at Tonatierra (7th Street and McKinley)

Join Puente in thier ongoing boycott and protest of the Diamondbacks. Meet at Tonatierra to walk over to the stadium. Bring your signs!

5. Wednesday, July 28: Prayer Vigil - 6:30pm

LOCATION: at the Capital

There will be an interfaith prayer vigil at the Capital on the eve of the law taking effect. All are welcome!

6. Wednesday, July 28: Policing the Police Training - 7-9:00pm

LOCATION: Phoenix Quaker Meeting House (1702 E. Glendale, 17th Street and Glendale)

7. Wednesday, July 28: La Comunidad Resiste Contra SB1070 - 7-11:30pm

LOCATION: Civic Space Park (424 N. Central Ave)

Join hundreds for a gathering and demonstration downtown!

- Procession to Federal Courthouse - 9:00am

Procession will begin at the Trinity Cathedral on Central and Roosevelt, right after the prayer service.

Actions, speakers, rally to be held at the Courthouse

- Gathering at Cesar Chavez Plaza (ALL DAY)

Folks will be gathering between the Courthouse and Cesar Chavez Plaza (across from the courthouse) all day. Come out with your signs, bring water, and sunscreen!
